eBay search craft
The difference between finding and missing on eBay is vocabulary. Work the specific terms sellers actually use: maker names, form words like kugel, indent, figural, topper, and era words like unsilvered or wartime. Search misspellings on purpose (Shiney Brite finds what Shiny Brite misses). Save searches and let the platform watch for you. The rails on this site are seeded with exactly these term patterns.
Condition grading, honestly
Condition drives vintage glass value more than rarity does. Grade what you see: silvering loss, paint loss, cap originality, chips at the neck (the fatal one), and whether the box is original. Sellers grade generously; photos grade honestly. Ask for a photo of the neck under the cap before paying real money for real glass.
Spotting reproductions
New glass in old styles is legitimate manufacture until someone sells it as old. The tells collectors check: weight and glass thickness (old mouth-blown glass runs thin and light), cap hardware style, wear that makes sense (uniform artificial dulling versus honest contact wear in the right places), and prices too kind for the claimed age. When a listing's story outruns its photos, let it go.
What the market is chasing
Watch the sold listings, not the asking prices: completed-sale filters are the only honest price guide. Perennially strong categories include early German figurals, wartime unsilvered pieces, first-in-series collectibles, and anything rare with its original box. That is a description of demand patterns, not investment advice; buy what you want to live with.
